The City of Tshwane is pleased to announce that all City-managed early childhood development (ECD) centres are in a good state and are ready to reopen in time for the 2023 school calendar year.
The City’s ECD centres will officially open from next week Monday, 16 January 2023. This is a major development for the City as most of our ECD centres had remained closed for an extended period of time due to lingering negative effects caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.
The City of Tshwane Community and Social Development Services Department manages a total of seven ECD centres which are located in Regions 3 and 6. All these facilities stand ready to serve our communities with solid foundational learning and development skills for our young ones.
As MMC for Social Development and Community Services, I believe that ECD centres play an important role in a child’s development. These centres provide the foundation for all future learning, behaviour and health. A strong foundation helps children develop the skills they need to become well-functioning adults. Optimising the early years of a child’s life is the best investment the City and communities can make in ensuring a successful future for our young ones.
Over the past year, our multiparty coalition government has invested in upgrading and revamping our ECD centres. The upgrades include extensive renovations, beefed up security and the following highlights:
- The employment of trained and professional teachers
- The employment of qualified chefs (providing good nutrition)
- Refreshed and up-to-date learning programme (future-proof, quality education)

It must be emphasised that all the personnel employed at these centres have been properly vetted, screened and cleared to work with children. Taking into consideration the current economic climate faced by our communities, we have ensured that enrolment fees are kept at a minimum at about R300 per month.
