City of Tshwane celebrates International Museum Day

The City of Tshwane, in partnership with Tshwane-based museums and heritage institutions celebrated International Museum Day on 18 May 2023 at Saulsville Library with an exhibition of collections.

International Museum Day was established by the International Council of Museums in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums in a developing world.

Tshwane has a large concentration of interesting museums and heritage sites. Since 1997, these institutions have been collaborating to celebrate International Museum each year.

This year’s theme is Museums, sustainability and well-being. The theme focuses on the importance of the environment, health and well-being, and how museums can contribute to these aspects as cultural institutions.

Museums play an important role in education and promoting sustainability and well-being by implementing initiatives that encourage environmental responsibility, health and well-being for visitors and staff.

I would like to encourage communities, young and old, to visit the different museums in our city and to familiarise themselves with the historical collections on offer.

Visitors are also encouraged to share their museum visits and experiences on social media platforms to create more awareness about Tshwane’s vast selection of museums.
