City of Tshwane unlocking development through strategic property releases

The City of Tshwane is on a drive to unlock development within its borders through strategic property releases that will benefit residents. Last week, Council approved a number of property transactions that will promote affordable inner-city housing and mixed-use development, space for an early childhood development centre, resolution of the Schubart Park matter and the expansion of the Tshwane North TVET College.

Finding the best use for the thousands of land parcels and properties owned by the City is a key objective of the multiparty government, as unlocking the potential of land will have a multiplier effect for economic and social development.

Vacant properties in the inner city have now been approved for long-term lease through a competitive bidding process for a developer to create a mixed-use development that will focus on social housing. This will meet the demand for well-located and affordable housing in the inner city that is close to amenities and educational institutions. It will also protect City land from invasion and urban decay, and uplift the neighbourhood.

An unused plot of land in Refilwe Manor will be leased for the development of a early childhood development centre – a vital part of providing educational opportunities that will set children up for success in their future. The property is located next to a local park, which is ideal for getting children out into the open.

A key property in Pretoria is Schubart Park, and we have now reached a settlement with the developer, which will see 75% of the property returned to the City as it was wrongfully included in the original transaction. The City will now work on plans to see this property restored to its former glory.

Finally, the Tshwane North TVET College in Mamelodi will finally receive the title deeds for the land so that they can begin vital upgrades and expansion. Providing quality educational opportunities is vital to provide local youths with the skills needed to enter the workplace and reduce our terrible levels of unemployment.

As MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, I want to encourage any partners who see an opportunity to lease City-owned land that will promote social and economic development in Tshwane to contact landapplications@tshwane.gov.za, and help make Tshwane a city that works for all residents.
