City of Tshwane  shuts down  non-compliant spaza shops in Pretoria North

Media statement                                                                                            18 October 2023

Cllr Cilliers Brink

Executive Mayor of Tshwane

Yesterday, 17 October 2023, I joined a multidisciplinary team of metro police officers and local economic development and health officials during a by-law enforcement operation in Winternest, Pretoria North.

The operation focussed on basic law enforcement, business licences and compliance by spaza shops, ensuring that they are health compliant.

Our teams closed one spaza shop in Theresapark for poor hygiene. The owner sleeps in the spaza shop along with the goods that are supposed to be sold to our people.

We closed another spaza shop in Winternest for several violations. The premises are also used for rental purposes with several medicinal products sold on-site.

In total, eight premises, including spaza shops and salons, were inspected. Six notices were issued for various offences ranging from contraventions of the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act to non-compliance with the Street Trading By-law and Fire Safety By-law.

Team members from the Development Compliance, Spatial Planning and Built Enforcement Sections also issued several contravention notices to a homeowner as well as a business operator for using their property to operate an illegal supermarket.

The City of Tshwane takes the issue of law and order as well as public safety very seriously. Our multiparty coalition government will not tolerate lawlessness and we will continue to conduct these operations in the interest of our residents, and issue fines or even shut down businesses when necessary.
