City of Tshwane Lynnwood Road upgrade project on track

On Tuesday, 23 January 2024, I joined the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Nasiphi Moya, at the Lynnwood Road widening project as part of our capital project to accommodate the extension of the A Re Yeng bus service to Mamelodi.

The widening project spans from January Masilela Drive to Simon Vermooten Road and is projected to be completed by January 2025. This initiative aligns with our commitment to create a more efficient, safe and accessible urban environment while fostering improved mobility within Tshwane.

Key elements of the project include the construction of two new 3,4 km × 3,5 m wide median Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes, one in each direction for Line 2C on Lynnwood Road. Additionally, new non-motorised transport (NMT) pedestrian sidewalks and cycle paths are being built, covering the stretch between January Masilela Drive and Simon Vermooten Road. The project also involves the landscaping of median islands and adjoining road reserves.

The City has established milestones for the project, and I am pleased to indicate that the project is currently at 26% completion rate, having surpassed our set target. Our objective is to reach the completion of this milestone as planned. The initiative has empowered residents as 62 employment opportunities have been created for our residents since the start of the project.

Undoubtedly, the project is progressing well and has achieved various highlights, including construction site clearing, traffic management, infrastructure upgrades, service duct installation, excavation, earth moving and drainage enhancements.

A great deal of work is still scheduled for culvert construction, kerbs and asphalt pavement installation, guardrails and signage placements, as well as electrical system upgrades.

I will continue to provide oversight of the department’s capital projects and endeavour to provide regular updates on our commitment to enhance public transport and infrastructure.
