City of Tshwane to issue heavy fines and confiscate vehicles caught illegally dumping

Media statement                                                                                                     6 May 2024

Cllr Cilliers Brink

Executive Mayor of Tshwane

The City of Tshwane has adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal dumping, working with the Tshwane Metro Police Department, and waste management and environment compliance teams, we are escalating efforts to enforce by-laws, confiscate vehicles and impose hefty fines against offenders.

We need to work together to keep Tshwane clean. On our part as the City and in an effort to improve our services, we have embarked on a waste management data-verification project aimed at addressing waste service billing accuracy and other related matters, such as applying for additional bins.

There is no excuse for illegal dumping. The City has operational disposal sites that are accessible to the public for domestic and garden refuse, and residents are encouraged to make use of these facilities to help keep Tshwane clean.

It is also important to note that waste bins are provided to residents on application for free. Households with excess waste and backroom dwellers are encouraged to apply for additional bins. Additional bins are also issued for free, however, service fees are charged per bin per month. To deliver waste collection services, the City levies a monthly service fee of R407,04.
