Media statement 21 November 2024
Cllr Nasiphi Moya
Executive Mayor of Tshwane
On Wednesday, 20 November 2024, I attended the launch of the Tshwane Green Foundation hosted by the Capital City Business Chamber (CBCC). The Tshwane Green Foundation is an initiative spearheaded by the CCBC to encourage businesses and the government to enhance efforts to fully transform the metro into a green city.
Green cities place sustainability at the forefront. This means a quality of life offered to residents that must encompass good air quality, low pollution and accessible green spaces for the advancement of urban development. The climate is changing and the consequences of this can only be made less disastrous if we are prepared.
Wednesday’s foundation launch saw hundreds of key business partners pledge their support towards the Tshwane Green Foundation. We saw financial contributions towards championing for a sustainable Tshwane.
I would like to encourage businesses to pledge their support towards the Tshwane Green Foundation by approaching the CCBC. The support can be monetary or resource based.
The City of Tshwane has implanted efforts to turn Tshwane green. We will host the C40 conference in 2025. We were awarded the co-hosting and co-chairing rights for the U20 Mayors Summit – a platform that encourages forward-thinking on sustainable development.
The City of Tshwane has a dedicated climate change unit called the City Sustainability Division. We introduced the Climate Budget Initiative, a governance system of mainstreaming climate commitments and considerations into key decision-making systems, including the City’s budget.
We are further exploring the possibility of establishing the Tshwane Climate Fund, which will be managed centrally. Though it is still in the prefeasibility stage, we also believe it will be another way of unlocking and attracting climate finance.
We are also in the process of finalising policy development to review mainstreaming climate aspects into the City’s key strategic documents. We are already on a path to embracing green for the futures of generations to follow.
