Media statement 20 December 2024
Cllr Nasiphi Moya
Executive Mayor of Tshwane
Following weeks of water shortage issues reported across our regions, I am pleased to report that most of our City’s reservoirs are healthy and steady as residents gear up for the festive season.
In a report presented during the Mayoral Committee’s weekly service delivery war room, the Water and Sanitation Department reported that most reservoirs were all reporting at above 50% capacity on 20 December 2024.
The City of Tshwane relies on water received from Rand Water-managed supply systems, Palmiet and Mapleton. If these systems experience issues, the City is unable to supply water to reservoirs that are scattered across our regions. Some regions have problematic reservoirs, mostly located in Regions 1, 3 and 4.
Water supply to areas in Soshanguve are often affected by pumping issues at Soshanguve L, Soshanguve L Tower, Soshanguve DD, Mabopane, Laudium, Atteridgeville HL and Lotus Gardens are also prone to disruptions.
The reason why these reservoirs struggle is because of high consumption, overpopulation, increased water demand, illegal connections and vandalism.
Updated reservoir levels:
• Laudium – 70%
• Pretoria West High Lands – 62%
• Soshanguve DD – 67%
• Soshanguve L – 60%
• Soshanguve L Tower – 99%
We have made several interventions in some areas to help augment supply to areas that have lower supply levels. In Nellmapius, the supply was slightly restricted to boost supply to Mamelodi reservoirs.
We caution residents to use water responsibly during the festive season. Gauteng is experiencing water shortages, and it is imperative that we are all mindful of how we can help save water.
• Do not water or irrigate gardens with a hosepipe or sprinkler system between 05:00 and 18:00.
• Do not use a hosepipe to clean cars.
• Do not fill or top up swimming pools or water features.
