The City of Tshwane closed Youth Month with the launch of the Tshwane Youth Climate Action Network (TY-CAN), a pioneering initiative that embodies the commitment of young people to address climate change and advance sustainable development.
By recognising that climate change is an immediate and pressing reality – manifested through rising temperatures, water scarcity, biodiversity loss, pollution and unpredictable weather – TY-CAN positions youth as central actors in shaping solutions.
TY-CAN is officially recognised as a youth advisory and stakeholder engagement structure in the City of Tshwane. This means that young voices directly influence municipal climate policy, implementation, monitoring and accountability.
Key moments of the launch included officially introducing the Steering Committee members, unveiling the TY-CAN logo, and engaging in panel discussions centred on youth-led climate action.
Instead of being sidelined, young people in Tshwane are now formally integrated into climate governance. This model ensures that policies reflect the creativity, urgency and lived experiences of the generation most affected by climate change. This is a shift from “asking to be heard” to being included at the decision-making table.
One of the most impressive aspects of TY-CAN is its commitment to inclusivity. Membership is open to young people between the ages of 15 and 35 who are committed to climate action and sustainability.
The network actively seeks representation from all communities, including historically marginalised communities, informal settlements, educational institutions, youth-led organisations, young entrepreneurs and emerging climate leaders.
TY-CAN embodies the following motto:

- Acting decisively to build a future rooted in sustainability and justice
