Marabastad informal trader stalls upgrade project progressing well

Recently, in my capacity as MMC for Economic Development and Spatial Planning, I conducted an oversight visit to the Marabastad Informal Trader Stalls Project to assess its development and general progress.

During the oversight visit, I was accompanied by City officials and the Chairperson of the Section 79 Oversight Committee on Economic Development, Cllr Pieter Meijer.

I am pleased to report that the project is progressing well and is currently at 70% towards completion.

My department was granted R7 million during the 2022/23 financial year for the construction of Phase 2 of the Marabastad Informal Trader Stalls Project. This project is part of the City’s overall strategic objective of formalising informal trading activities through the provision of dedicated trading zones, enhancing compliance with municipal by-laws and supporting the growth of the informal trading sector.

Furthermore, the Marabastad Informal Trader Stalls Project will provide trading space for informal traders to sell cooked food and vegetables, as well as a meat chopping facility. About 65 informal traders are expected to benefit from this project.

Informal traders will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the facility, including the cleaning and upkeep of the trading areas and ablution facility, while the City of Tshwane will continue to provide security and overall management of the facility, including allocating trading spaces and issuing permits to traders.

In the City of Tshwane, our multiparty coalition government is committed to assisting all informal traders while stepping up measures to combat unlawful dealing and by-law violations.
