MMC for Health
On 14 January 2024, the Gauteng MEC for Health, Ms Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, called for nominations of individuals to serve on clinic committees for the 2024–2027 period. As the MMC responsible for Health in the City of Tshwane, I would like to support this call because clinic committees play an important role as the interface between communities and clinics. Clinic committees are nominated by community members and ensure that the primary healthcare facility remains responsive to community needs. They play an important oversight role.
The criteria provided by the Gauteng Department of Health for nominations of clinic committee members requires that the person –
- be older than 18 years of age and a South African citizen;
- have at least a Matric qualification;
- has not been certified by a court of law as being of unsound mind;
- has not been convicted of a crime without an option of a fine, unless they have received a free pardon or a period of ten years has lapsed since release from prison and they are certified as fully rehabilitated by the Department of Correctional Services;
- must reside in the community serviced by the clinic and have sound knowledge, understanding and involvement in community work and have knowledge of the health sector; and
- must have skills and/or experience in community development and leadership.
Nomination forms are available at clinics and once completed can be submitted there as well. Nominations close at 16:30 on 31 January 2024. Successful nominees will serve on the clinic committees on a volunteer basis (no stipend) for a three-year period.
Clinic committees are ideally placed to advocate for community needs as far as healthcare is concerned. Do make use of this opportunity to place your nominations.
