As the MMC for Utility Services, on 6 February 2025, I visited WF Nkomo Sewer Pump Station in Region 3 to conduct a site inspection together with the ward councillor of Ward 7. Upon arrival, we discovered that the pump station was overflowing, which poses a significant health hazard to nearby communities and causes environmental pollution. This situation exposes residents to both health and environmental risks, which could potentially trigger waterborne diseases.
Following this site inspection, as a matter of urgency, I contacted the acting Group Head: Water and Sanitation to obtain more details regarding the overflow at WF Nkomo Sewer Pump Station, including the steps being taken to resolve the issue.
I am pleased to inform the community that the Waste Water Collection Subsection in the Water and Sanitation Section in Region 3 is fully aware of the sewer overflow from WF Nkomo Sewer Pump Station into the nearby stream. This overflow is due to a sewer line blockage, which is necessary to facilitate ongoing refurbishment and maintenance work at the pump station. The contractor is already on-site, installing screens and grids on the inlet manholes to prevent debris from entering the sump and ultimately damaging the pumps.
The overall work is expected to be completed by the end of February 2025. The Water and Sanitation Department is working diligently to prevent sewer spillages from contaminating local ecosystems, including streams and rivers, through a comprehensive maintenance plan. The optimal functioning of WF Nkomo Sewer Pump Station contributes to restoring dignity for Atteridgeville residents and commuters who daily use Dr WF Nkomo Street.
My office, along with the Water and Sanitation Department, will continue to monitor WF Nkomo Sewer Pump Station until the spillage and overflow issues are fully resolved, thus ensuring the safety and protection of both the community and the environment.
This administration strives to ignite service excellence, and we are committed to see the 100% completion of the refurbishment of WF Nkomo Sewer Pump Station.
