The City of Tshwane and the City of Johannesburg launched the eighth cycle of the Urban 20 (U20), a first for African cities, at the Government Communication and Information Systems building on 3 March 2025. The Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Cllr Nasiphi Moya, emphasised the significance of the historic moment, stating, “This is a recognition of the role African cities must play in shaping the global urban agenda.”
Under the theme Cities leading the way in reimagining Global Change, the 2025 U20 cycle will address urban challenges and amplify the voices of African cities. Key priorities include economic opportunities, climate action, social inclusion and digital innovation.
Cllr Moya highlighted the importance of local impact, citing initiatives such as bicycle lanes, solar power systems, tree planting and youth-led climate projects. The event also emphasised community engagement and academic collaboration.
In June 2025, Tshwane will host the U20 Sherpa Meeting, which will help shape G20 recommendations. The cycle will culminate in the Johannesburg Mayors Summit, which will take place from 12 to 14 September 2025 and will influence global summits.
“This is our moment to lead,” said Cllr Moya, stressing the aim for a “just, sustainable and inclusive” urban future. Together with the South African Local Government Association and South African Cities Network, the cities are determined to drive meaningful change.
