The City of Tshwane regrets to inform customers residing in Themba and surrounding areas about a temporary water supply interruption following the shutdown of Themba Water Treatment Plant. This decision was taken as a necessary precaution to protect public health due to water quality challenges currently experienced at the plant.
The challenges stem from a sewer discharge that has been detected flowing into the Apies River, which feeds into the Leeukraal Dam – the primary water source for Themba Water Treatment Plant. As a result, the raw water quality has deteriorated, making it unsafe for processing and distribution in its current state.
While the City initially reduced the plant’s pumping capacity to manage the issue, the situation has unfortunately reached a point where continuing to pump is unsustainable. In an effort to prevent poor-quality water from reaching residents, operations at the plant have been temporarily halted until the water quality stabilises.
To assist communities during this period, roaming water tankers will be dispatched to the affected areas to ensure continued access to clean water. These tankers will be strategically routed to reach as many residents as possible until normal supply can be restored.
The following areas are currently affected:
- Dilopye
- Hammanskraal West
- Lepheng
- Majaneng
- Refentse
- Renstown
- Sekampaneng
- Suurman
- Unit 7
The City understands the inconvenience this causes and is working diligently to resolve the situation.
Residents are kindly urged to use water sparingly. Your cooperation is vital as we work to restore safe and reliable water supply to all affected communities.
Further updates will be communicated as new information becomes available
