The City of Tshwane appoints a private contractor to augment the electricity teams to accelerate repair work and power restoration in East Lynne and Jan Niemand Park

The City of Tshwane’s Energy and Electricity Business Unit teams have been bolstered today by the appointment of a private contractor to augment the internal capacity, with a view to accelerating the repair of multiple cable faults and the restoration of power to consumers in East Lynne and Jan Niemand Park.

The contractor is already on site and has begun preparations alongside the City’s officials, while awaiting the imminent delivery of approximately 1 km of new medium-voltage cable to replace the damaged cable that has experienced multiple faults.

The City’s officials worked through the night and successfully repaired seven cable faults, restoring power to two mini-substations. This increased the power restoration for consumers from 70% to approximately 80%. The teams are continuing to identify faults within the cable network while replacing about 1 km of the problematic cable. The total cable network to be tested for possible faults is approximately 15 km.

On Friday, 26 December 2025, the Koedoespoort Substation, located in the east of Tshwane, experienced an electrical fault that led to a fire, causing massive damage to the substation’s critical equipment. As a result, East Lynne and Jan Niemand Park were plunged into darkness.

The City’s technicians began repair work earnestly and replaced all the damaged critical equipment, restoring power to approximately 50% of consumers. Subsequent repairs have increased restoration to about 80% to date. Jan Niemand and parts of East Lynne are still without power.

The City wishes to reiterate its profound apology to affected consumers and pleads for their patience and understanding as efforts gain momentum to complete repairs on the remaining cable faults before full power restoration can be achieved. The appointment of a contractor has provided the necessary impetus to accelerate the repair and restoration process.

The estimated time for full power restoration is not yet available. The City will continue to provide affected consumers with regular updates on the developments.
