The City of Tshwane shapes global urban policy discussions at the 2026 Urban20 Sherpa Meeting

The City of Tshwane participated in the Urban20 (U20) Sherpa Meeting held in Los Angeles from 11 to 12 May 2026, where cities collaborated on shaping urban priorities ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit. The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration among cities and shaping the draft U20 Communiqué that will be presented to G20 leaders later in the year. As a former U20 co-chair city alongside Johannesburg in 2025, Tshwane continues to play an active role in global urban diplomacy and in advocating for inclusive, resilient and sustainable cities.

As the 2026 co-chairs, Los Angeles and New York tabled the 2026 U20 priorities as follows:

  • Expanding access to housing and addressing homelessness
  • Strengthening climate action and urban resilience
  • Supporting migrant and vulnerable communities through inclusive urban policies

The Chief Operations Officer, in her capacity as the U20 Sherpa, Ms Vuyo Zitumane, reaffirmed the City of Tshwane’s commitment to advancing sustainable development goals and ensuring that African city perspectives continue to shape global urban policy discussions. “The Urban20 Sherpa Meeting reaffirmed that sustainable urban development can only be achieved through collaborative city-led action that prioritises inclusion, resilience and innovation in addressing global urban challenges,” said Ms Zitumane.

The final Communiqué that will be endorsed by the U20 Mayors after consultations will be handed over to the 2026 G20 Presidency for adoption as the blueprint for addressing the highlighted critical urban challenges.
