City goes digital with Expanded Public Works Programme registration

The City launched a USSD platform for Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) registration on Monday, 20 November 2023. The newly launched USSD platform is user-friendly and accessible, and will streamline the registration process for EPWP job recruitment. The USSD platform was launched by the MMC for Community and Social Development Services, Cllr Peggy de Bruin, at Sammy Marks Square in the Pretoria CBD.

This newly launched platform will eliminate the need for lengthy paperwork and make the EPWP registration process more convenient and efficient for everyone. The main advantage of this platform is that it will enhance transparency and accountability. By launching the platform, the City intends to ensure that jobseekers’ information is captured accurately and that the risk of errors or fraudulent activities is reduced.

Previously, the City used an electronic lottery system for hiring EPWP jobseekers. According to Cllr De Bruin, EPWP registration through the lottery system was a challenge as it was causing delays and hindering the effective implementation of the EPWP.

Cllr De Bruin said that the USSD platform is designed to be inclusive, ensuring that every individual between the ages of 18 and 60 years, regardless of their background or access to technology, can participate in this transformative programme. By dialling *120*5757# on a mobile phone, individuals, regardless of their technological capabilities, will be able to register for the EPWP.

By dialling *120*5757#, jobseekers will be able to provide their personal details, such as their names and identity numbers, allowing the City’s team to match beneficiaries with relevant EPWP job opportunities.

According to Cllr De Bruin, the platform will provide real-time updates and notifications, ensuring that jobseekers are informed about new opportunities as they arise. The City will also be able to track the progress of beneficiaries, gather data on their experiences and identify areas for improvement.

In closing, the MMC urged residents to embrace this platform, to register on it and to actively engage with the opportunities it presents.
