To prevent the further spread of the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak and to protect animal health, public health and food safety, permission is required to slaughter animals for personal consumption as well as for cultural or religious purposes.
Individuals planning to slaughter hoofed animals (ungulates), such as cattle, sheep, goats and pigs, are required to obtain official permission from the City of Tshwane before proceeding. Unregulated slaughter during the FMD outbreak can contribute to the rapid spread of the disease and pose dangers to both animals and humans.

Failure to obtain permission before slaughtering during the FMD outbreak may result in enforcement action.
