City of Tshwane to accelerate relocation of flood victims following land acquisition

The City of Tshwane welcomes the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements’ purchase of land to house the floods victims from Region 5 and 6 informal settlements.

The land is situated at Pienaarspoort in Region 5, measures 472 ha and is expected to accommodate 15 700 stands.

On Monday, in my capacity as MMC of Human Settlements, I met with the affected community members and their ward councillor to announce the new developments.

The City has made provisions for the relocation costs, including transport, clearing and preparation of the site. Rudimentary water and sanitation services will be provided once the communities have been moved.

A land surveyor and a town planner will be deployed to inspect the land and make necessary preparations for the upcoming relocations.

The proposed land will be rezoned accordingly, and the declaration of the township will be prioritised in preparation of the bulk infrastructure. The rezoning and declarations process will not hinder relocations, and the relocations are eminent.

My department has taken the plight of the flood victims seriously and we continue to work tirelessly to identify suitable land for beneficiaries. Our goal is to ensure that we relocate identified beneficiaries to their permanent stands before the start of the rainy season.

As MMC for Human Settlements, I am pleased with this progress that will surely restore the dignity of our people.
