City of Tshwane takes the World Read Aloud Day campaign to local schools to encourage reading in home languages

On Wednesday, 1 February 2023, the City of Tshwane will mark and celebrate World Read Aloud Day. It is a day that is dedicated to promoting a culture of reading aloud by children with their families, teachers and caregivers.

Our Library, Heritage and Information Services Section will drive the City’s Read Aloud Day campaign to local primary schools to encourage reading among learners, particularly in their native languages. The campaign is targeting learners from Grade R to 7, and in my capacity as MMC for Social Development and Community Services, I will join the campaign and read aloud at Kulani Primary School in Winterveld.

Our teams will spread out across all regions where they will participate in reading exercises with the learners. Details are as follows:

Regions Name of school Time
Travelling library Kulani Primary School, 1378 Anglican Stand, Winterveld 10:00
Region 1 Maropeng and Bodubelo Primary Schools, Ga-Rankuwa 09:00
Region 2 Mokonyama Primary School, Hammanskraal 09:00
Region 3 Phuthaditjhaba Primary School, Atteridgeville 11:00
Region 4 Valhalla Primary School, Valhalla 10:00
Region 5 Sedibeng, Chokoe and Onverwacht Primary Schools, Refilwe and Onverwacht 10:00
Region 6 Legora, Emasangweni and Mahube Primary School, Mamelodi 09:00
Region 7 Vezulwazi, Kgoro and Tshilidzini Primary Schools, Zithobeni 11:00

I wish to encourage learners to read in their home language to ensure the continuation and preservation of indigenous languages and for parents to take the lead in inculcating reading habits during their children’s formative years.
