Expanded artisan training programme will improve crucial services

The Tshwane Leadership and Management Academy in Pretoria West runs a well-established apprenticeship and artisan training programme with an annual intake of 120 students.

This programme is fully accredited and offers various artisan trades, such as electrical, vehicle mechanic (diesel and petrol), welding, fitting and turning, boiler making and plumbing.

An urgent need to increase plumbing skills training was identified to address water losses caused by water leaks in the city. For this reason, R18 million was invested to upgrade and capacitate the plumbing workshop. Upon full operation, the training capacity will increase the annual intake from 15 plumbing apprentices to 45.

This upgrade will also see the introduction of water services practitioner qualifications and the opportunity to train and upskill existing City employees, and provide training in new water conservation technologies.

The City realised that it is crucial to encourage artisan training as more electricians and plumbers are needed to improve and deliver reliable water and electricity services to customers.
