The City launches a science laboratory at Hofmeyer High School in Atteridgeville as part of Youth Month commemorations

As part of the Youth Month celebrations, the City’s Economic Development and Spatial Planning Department joined hands with strategic partners to open a science laboratory at Hofmeyer High School in Atteridgeville.

This cutting-edge, 42-seat science laboratory is a culmination of efforts by the City, the Gauteng Department of Education, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, Hofmeyer High School and our strategic partner, PPC. Through the science laboratory, learners of Hofmeyer High School will be able to develop practical scientific reasoning abilities and self-directed learning for the first time, and they will be able to investigate chemical properties and reactions.

The Social Labour Plans Facilitation Outreach Campaign of the Economic Development and Spatial Planning Department is an essential part of mobilising resources in the mining industry and is consistent with the strategic goal of the multiparty coalition to build a business-friendly city that supports employment and economic progress. There are several critical areas that could benefit from further discussions and potential cooperation as part of the third phase of the PPC Social Labour Plan project resourcing, including sector skills development and school laboratories in Tshwane townships.

The main donor of the science laboratory, PPC Mooiplaas, employs about 504 people, most of whom are from different parts of Tshwane, and provides benefits to 180 contractors. In Tshwane, PPC Products has a 130-year historical legacy.

I want to thank the management of PPC Mooiplaas for their unwavering dedication to carrying out social labour plan projects in Tshwane and to remind the business community that Tshwane is open and welcoming to business. I would also like to thank other stakeholders from the government for the support they provided to make this project a success.
