Theophelus Rikhotso, Khorho (2023), charcoal on Fabriano, 125 cm × 200 cm

Join us for a walkabout with the artist on Saturday, 12 August 2023, at 11:00.

In this body of work resulting from almost a year of art residency at the Pretoria Art Museum as part of the Kopanong Art Studio Residency Programme, Theophelus Rikhotso will present an exhibition titled, Mikondzo ya vakokwani – The Ancestors’ Footsteps.  This body of work consists of sculptures, paintings and drawings. Rikhotso uses various mediums, such as metal, steel and soil, to explore the historical cultural heritage of the Vatsonga and a sense of belonging. He is interested in the way identity and memory are interwoven with a locale through cultural boundaries. The narratives he brings to life are tightly informed by his childhood memories of his rural village upbringing.
