Wonderboom National Airport successfully upgrades its aerodrome licence status from Category 2 to Category 5

Wonderboom National Airport has upgraded its aerodrome licence from Category 2 to Category 5 following the outcome of the recent three-month oversight audit by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA).

The airport’s administrative systems, operational procedures, infrastructure, serviceability of aeronautical facilities and equipment, security measures and other aviation elements went above the minimum thresholds of civil aviation standards and were all found ultra satisfactory by SACAA.

The City of Tshwane is pleased with SACAA’s decision to grant Wonderboom National Airport a status commensurate to the structure of the administration and condition of the aeronautical infrastructure, facilities and equipment availed to the flying public at the highest levels of quality, safety and security.

The upgrade of Wonderboom National Airport’s aerodrome licence status displays the necessary competencies of the City to manage the airport in terms of the prescribed civil aviation regulations, industry best practices, norms and standards. This in turn boosts market confidence to attract the needed investments for air commerce and subsequent growth of the airport.

This status essentially means that Wonderboom National Airport is now statutorily allowed to handle commercial scheduled airline services without any airport emergency services and compromise of safety and security measures. The current development now allows the City to confidently open its doors and welcome interested airline operators that wish to introduce scheduled flight services at Wonderboom National Airport.

We remain committed to ensure that the airport is fully supported and well capacitated to deliver on its mandate of boosting economic development opportunities in Tshwane.
