City of Tshwane condemns criminality by illegal strikers

As the MMC for Community Safety, I condemn the violent outbreaks and incidents caused by the illegal and unprotected strikes yesterday. We received various reports of suspected arson, stoning of City and private vehicles, and intimidation and death threats aimed at officials who are willing to perform their duties. All these incidents are wilful sabotage, which often places residents of Tshwane at risk.

Let me make it abundantly clear that these actions are completely unacceptable. Any sympathy that the strikers might have had has dissipated, and rightly so. Regardless of how just one’s cause might be, there can never be an excuse for targeted intimidation, death threats and acts of violence, which in some instances were extended to the families of officials.

We are doing everything in our power to address these matters and to provide a safe working environment for officials who are willing to perform their duties. We are engaging other spheres of government, specifically within the security cluster, to identify and trace the individuals involved in these crimes. We will leave no stone unturned in this regard, and those identified will face all possible consequences.

On behalf of the multiparty coalition government, I want to thank those who have come to our aid, such as contractors, the private sector and members of society.

I also want to wholeheartedly apologise to residents who have been left without services due to this illegal and unprotected strike. I want to assure you that the City is doing everything in its power to resolve this situation as soon as possible.

We plead your patience with the councillors and officials who are trying to assist you during this difficult time.
