City withdraws bus operations amid commuter safety concerns

Media Statement

Ald Katlego Mathebe

MMC for Roads and Transport

The City would like to notify residents that we have regrettably withdrawn our Tshwane Bus Services and A Re Yeng operations with immediate effect. This decision follows several incidents of organised violence and destruction of property in Tshwane earlier today.

A City of Tshwane bakkie, water tanker, three trucks and an A Re Yeng bus were damaged in various violent attacks in the Pretoria CBD. Therefore, in the interest of the safety of our commuters and employees, we took the decision to suspend operations.

Furthermore, it is important that we protect City infrastructure from these criminal acts.  It is now clear that the City is no longer dealing with an illegal strike action, but a well-coordinated criminal attack on our infrastructure.

I would like to apologise to our commuters for the inconvenience caused. The City will work to ensure that all efforts are intensified to get bus services back on track when it is safe to do so.
