City of Tshwane Food Bank assists over 1 500 beneficiaries in the last three months

Media statement                                                                                            2 February 2024

Cllr Nasiphi Moya

Deputy Mayor

Community and Social Development Services

Earlier today, in my role as the Deputy Mayor of Tshwane, I had the privilege to visit the Tshwane Food Bank and the Marabastad Trading Stalls Project.

The Tshwane Food Bank plays a vital role in our City’s efforts to effectively provide necessities to the most vulnerable and indigent members of our community. In the last quarter (October 2023, November 2023 and December 2023) the City was able to assist 1 531 beneficiaries through this programme.

Part of our responsibility is to assist deserving families and be prepared for emergencies. It is crucial that we maintain sufficient stock levels at the Tshwane Food Bank, and I am happy with the current levels of stock at the centre.

During this visit, I also stopped at the Marabastad Trading Stalls Project, accompanied by Ald Hannes Coetzee, MMC for Economic Development and Spatial Planning.

This project, with a City investment of R7 million, has paved the way for 65 new stalls and three storage units to cater to informal traders.

The primary objective of the trading stalls project is to offer dedicated trading zones for informal traders, promote compliance with municipal by-laws and provide support to this essential sector.

Our visit to both the Tshwane Food Bank and the Marabastad Trading Stalls Project underscores our commitment to addressing the needs of our community and supporting local businesses. We remain dedicated to creating an environment where all residents have access to necessities and opportunities for economic growth.
