City of Tshwane teams working to restore power following weekend outages caused by thunderstorms

Media statement                                                                                             19 February 2024

Cllr Cilliers Brink

Executive Mayor of Tshwane

This morning, I joined the City’s electricity teams on the ground to inspect and address the damage to our service infrastructure caused by severe thunderstorms this past weekend.

Large parts of Tshwane experienced power outages because of trees falling on overhead lines that now need to be repaired.

I would like to assure residents that our teams are actively on the ground, investigating all incidents and working tirelessly to restore power. This includes addressing breakdowns, replacing transformers, clearing obstructed lines and attending to overhead line breakdowns. During this period, we ask for patience as some repairs might be prolonged due to the severity of the damage.

In Region 1, there are block outages and mini-substation trips. While power has been restored to a large area, specific streets, including Suider Street, Emily Hobhouse Avenue, Berg Street and Burger Street, require additional repairs due to line damages.

Region 2 reported few area outages. Repair efforts are underway, including on-site repairs of broken lines and investigations into other affected areas. Supply has been restored at the Magalieskruin and Pyramid Power Line.

In Region 3, four medium-voltage area outages and a few other area outages were reported. Region 4 was also not spared and reported trees falling on cables and hanging on poles and blockages of roads and driveways.

In Region 5, a rural line outage is impacting a sewer pump station, resulting in the pumping of raw sewer into the stream. We are prioritising the restoration of power in this area to mitigate any further environmental impact. Region 6 has been particularly affected, with nine area outages reported.

We understand the urgency of the situation and assure residents that we are dedicating all available resources to expedite the restoration process in all the affected areas.
