Executive Mayor of Tshwane collects over 1 000 waste bags in Pretoria North Tswelopele Clean-up Drive

Media statement                                                                                                  29 April 2024

Cllr Cilliers Brink

Executive Mayor of Tshwane

Recently, I joined our Tswelopele Clean-up Campaign in Pretoria North for a multistakeholder team effort to clean up several areas and open spaces in Ward 2.

A total of 1 050 bags of waste were collected on Koos De La Rey Street, Gerrit Maritz Road, Jan Van Riebeeck Street and Station Street. Our urban management teams also provided support with cutting grass, repairing street lights and fixing water leaks.

The Tswelopele Campaign is aimed at encouraging residents and businesses to work together with the City to clean up our communities and living spaces. It is also important that we work together to change our behaviours and mindsets to stop littering.

The City spends about R30 million per year to clear illegal dumping sites. These are funds that could go to improving other core services if we all stopped littering and illegal dumping. We must work together to keep Tshwane clean.

I want to thank our Tswelopele partners for their support on Friday, namely Thandanani Drop In Centre, iThemba Careers, aQuellé, At South Africa We Can and other local businesses.

We welcome all partnership requests and encourage residents to take pride in keeping their living spaces healthy and clean.

Our Tswelopele Clean-up Campaigns are not a replacement for regular City cleaning programmes and services. These campaigns are aimed at mobilising various stakeholders to join hands and work towards keeping Tshwane clean.

The City of Tshwane would like to call on residents to assist us by reporting illegal dumping to the Tshwane Metro Police Department on 012 358 7095/7096.
