Responsibilities of the Office of the Speaker include the following:
- Plays a coordination and management role at all Council meetings
- Plays a coordination and management role in respect of the oversight and standing committees
- Establishes, manages and evaluates the performance of Section 79 oversight and standing committees
- Chairs the programming committee
- Ensures the functionality of ward committees
- Coordinates and manages civic education programmes and workshops
- Coordinates and manages public participation meetings
- Renders secretariat services
- Provides the necessary political leadership in ward participatory governance and ensures the involvement of communities in municipal affairs through public participation and stakeholder forums
