Functions of the Office of the Speaker

Responsibilities of the Office of the Speaker include the following:

  1. Plays a coordination and management role at all Council meetings
  2. Plays a coordination and management role in respect of the oversight and standing committees
  3. Establishes, manages and evaluates the performance of Section 79 oversight and standing committees
  4. Chairs the programming committee
  5. Ensures the functionality of ward committees
  6. Coordinates and manages civic education programmes and workshops
  7. Coordinates and manages public participation meetings
  8. Renders secretariat services
  9. Provides the necessary political leadership in ward participatory governance and ensures the involvement of communities in municipal affairs through public participation and stakeholder forums
