BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The farm Garsfontein 374-JR was established in 1859 (Deeds Office, Pretoria). The first owner was JA Beetge. The main portion of the reserve was developed as a dairy farm and belonged to Mr Jacobus Rademeyer. He was born in 1815 and married Cornelia Jacoba Erasmus. After Mr Rademeyers’ death, Mr Carel Jacobus Erasmus bought the farm in 1877. He built a three-roomed house known today as the chapel. In 1903, his son-in-law, Johan Marneweck, built his house on the land. It has since been converted into Rademeyers Restaurant.

The farm was transferred to the City Council of Pretoria in the early 1970s with planning to turn it into a regional park, but residents of the area negotiated in 1984 that the area be developed as a nature reserve.

Hiking trails

• Rademeyer Hiking Trail: 1,4 km (wheelchair-friendly, wheelchairs can operate on the tar road)
• Duiker Hiking Trail: 2,7 km (medium)
• Suikerbos Hiking Trail: 3,98 km (medium to hard)

Other activities

• Birdwatching
• Game viewing: Springbok, blesbok, impala, zebra, bushbuck, ostrich and mountain reedbuck

TARIFFS

The reserve is cashless.

The tariffs below are valid from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

• No loud noise is allowed.
• No picnics are allowed.
• No pets are allowed.
• Groups of 20 people should apply for a group activity. No groups larger than 20 people can be accommodated.

VISITING HOURS

• Gate times: 06:00 to 18:00 (winter and summer)
• Entrance to the nature reserve will only be allowed until one hour before closing time on weekdays and two hours before closing on weekends.
