The newly upgraded Pilditch Stadium is back on track

Pilditch Stadium has reopened its gates after an extensive renovation.

The athletics track and other field infrastructure deteriorated over the years to the extent that they were no longer suitable for official events and meetings and had to be refurbished. The Pilditch facelift started in 2018 and was officially completed in 2021. Delays were experienced due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its restrictions.

Some of the upgrades include new synthetic athletics and training tracks that meet international standards certified by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

The other upgrades to the facility include the following:

  • New irrigation system on the inner field and embankments
  • Refurbished VIP area
  • New grass for the field items
  • Upgraded long jump pits
  • Upgraded pavilion
  • New safety fence around the athletics track

The Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Alderman Randall Williams, joined the MMC for Community and Social Development Services, Cllr Thabisile Vilakazi, to officially reopen the newly upgraded stadium last week.

“The upgrades to Pilditch Stadium are extensive and we are happy to showcase this facility to the public. In the City of Tshwane, things are done differently, we value good governance and ensuring quality investment in our sporting infrastructure,” said Alderman Williams.

To recognise that the City has made a great investment in the upgrading of the facility, the use of it must be maximised by hosting regional, local, national and international athletics and other relevant and meaningful events.

“It’s critically important that as the City we invest in our sporting facilities as they provide opportunities for young people to develop their sporting skills,” added Williams.
