R134 million to refurbish Wapadrand Substation

The City announced its R134 million Wapadrand Substation refurbishment project which will bring an end to recurring electricity outages. In the past few years, the substation has been regularly catching fire and experiencing mechanical breakdowns, leaving several communities in Pretoria East without electricity for days.

The scope of work will take place in four phases and includes the following:

  • Demolishing the existing building that was damaged by fire last year
  • Constructing a new substation building to house three 11 kV panels
  • Installing a 35 MVA transformer
  • Relocating supply cables to the newly built substation
  • Constructing a guardroom

The restoration of the substation will take at least three years. The substation will be completely redesigned in terms of modern design technology that will also include a number of safety aspects that did not exist before.

The Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Ald Randall Williams, reaffirmed the City’s commitment to prioritise the refurbishment and maintenance of critical infrastructure in order to enable economic growth and to provide excellent service delivery to all Tshwane residents.
