City supports local football development

Over the weekend, the City, in collaboration with JDR Stars Football Club and its partners, donated football kits and sporting equipment to three local football clubs in Soshanguve, namely KDS United Football Club, Young Spartans Football Club and Holbeach Football Club. These teams had reached out to the City for sporting attire and equipment donations.

The successful event took place at Giant Stadium where the MMC for Social Development and Community Services, Cllr Peggy de Bruin, conducted the official handover on behalf of the City.

The main objective of this event is to empower and support local football with club development programmes, coaching clinics and mentoring. It does not end here, as the plan is to eventually support and promote different sporting codes through the development of community centres.

Cllr de Bruin said that the City had seen it fit to give soccer kits and goalposts to different local soccer teams in Tshwane in order to promote and revive the love of sport in townships. Supporting local teams across the seven regions of Tshwane improves sport development, especially in townships, and helps keep youngsters away from the streets.

“We need to develop sports as they help keep our young ones away from all the social ills we see, as well as giving them exposure to bigger tournaments and leagues. These young ones are the future and the City needs to invest in them, their teams, and the coaches who dedicate their time,” said De Bruin.

The City will further donate soccer goalposts to the following associations across the
seven regions of Tshwane:

Area Local Football Association (LFA)
Cullinan Nokeng LFA
Soshanguve Soshanguve LFA
Bronkhorstspruit Kungwini LFA
Hammanskraal Hammanskraal LFA
Stinkwater/New Eersterus (2) Stinkwater LFA
Olievenhoutbosch Oliven LFA
Ga-Rankuwa Ga-Rankuwa LFA

“Sport is a source of national pride that builds social and cultural bridges by bringing people from all walks of life together. And so, I want to encourage our communities to protect our sporting facilities. It is important that we guard our infrastructure and buildings for the benefit of future generations,” concluded De Bruin.

A big thank you to our partners:
