The war against potholes will be won soon by the City of Tshwane

Running its own crusher plant will assist the City to accelerate repairing potholes and reduce the current backlog. The City of Tshwane has invested R46 million to upgrade the Bon Accord Quarry Crusher Plant in Onderstepoort. This investment will ensure that the plant operates optimally and assists the City to produce and provide its own material for the building and maintenance of roads.

The City will no longer procure asphalt mix from external service providers to fix potholes. With this plant, the City will produce its own road building and maintenance materials. The materials will also be used for the City to produce its own hot-mix asphalt and ready-mix concrete, and to build and maintain tar roads.

The City also deployed Jetpatcher technology that was commissioned to help the City reduce its pothole patching backlog. The Jetpatcher pothole machine has received positive feedback from councillors across different political lines and teams on the ground who have been working to speedily repair these road defects within affected communities.

In the space of one week, the City has fixed over 4 000 m2 of potholes and road failures using the Jetpatcher machinery in various regions of Tshwane. Key areas covered include Rosslyn, Soshanguve South Ext 2, New Eersterus, Mangobo, Zwartkop, Eldoraigne and Wierdapark, as well as Garsfontein Road and Brakfontein Road in Highveld.

To provide the financial backing needed to maintain our roads, the City set aside R154 million in its 2022/23 budget allocation for road maintenance. This represents a budget increase of about R17 million from the previous financial year.

The City is always seeking ways to improve services and the Jetpatcher machine technology has proven to be a great asset in accelerating pothole repairs and improving general road maintenance. We are endeavouring to reduce potholes in Tshwane.

Please report potholes at pothole@tshwane.gov.za and indicate the street name and street number nearest to the pothole, the nearest intersection, the name of the suburb, and your name and email address or contact number.
