The City’s electricity tariffs work on an inclining block tariff structure. Tariffs are the same for prepaid and conventional meters. An inclining block tariff structure means the price of electricity is divided into several blocks. The price per unit or kilowatt hour (kWh) is cheapest in the first block. When the threshold or limit for the block is reached, the consumer’s usage will move the to the next block where the price per unit becomes more expensive.
The electricity sliding scale tariffs for the 2022/23 financial year that are applicable to households are as follows:
Electricity residential: Domestic standard supply
|
Tariff c/kWh
(Excluding VAT) |
Block 1 (1 to 100 kWh) | 209,70 |
Block 2 (101 to 400 kWh) | 245,41 |
Block 3 (401 to 650 kWh) | 267,38 |
Block 4 (More than 650 kWh) | 288,24 |
For a connection with a conventional meter, the charge is for energy consumed per 30-day billing period since the previous meter reading.
Prepaid energy purchases are charged per calendar month. At the end of each billing period, the usage is reset to zero and the customer is billed starting from the first block. For prepaid consumers, any unused units are carried over to the following month.
Cost-saving tip for prepaid customers: It is recommended that electricity units are purchased to be sufficient for use within one calendar month only. It is preferable that consumers purchase electricity at the beginning of each calendar month.
The City recommends that prepaid customers buy units directly from the City as other sellers can have additional fees on transactions.

Why is the prepay electricity so much higher than last month? Even for buying on the 3rd day of the month!
I am residing in Cullinan.
How many units for prepaid should i get for R600
Thank you
I bought R1600.00 worth of electricity and it keep me for a month.I bought exactly the same amount for this month and it did not last till the 15th.I had to buy another R250 worth of electricity only received 71 units .Why is it different this month.I know there was an increase…but as a pensioner it is a bit difficult.
Lots of loadshedding hours. And expensive rates
R500 gives 167units is so little
I live in Kuilsriver, why do I only get 68.4 units for R200 and units are deducted without using any appliances, only lights, tv and fridges are on.
The block system that City Power is using to allocate units is crippling the pensioners and the poor, it is not beneficial to those that can’t afford to pay so much units. The units from one month to the next should give you the same amount of units, WE CANT AFFORD YOUR CRAP SYSTEM, IT IS PUTTING ALOT OF US IN A DIRE SITUATION.
Good evening I bought a house in a complex, we start using a prepaid electricity system from third party kindly cancel you advise the difference when we buy electricity from municipality and third like Recharge and others third party, also it can be possible to change from third party prepaid meter to municipality prepaid meter in our complete town house kindly advise.
I don’t understand the key change, there is Key 1 & key 2 and Credit token..
Key Change 1 has numbers as well as Key change 2,together with Credit token..
WHICH NUMBERS SHOULD I ENTER INTO MY METER NUMBER CAUSE AM STRUGGLING?
This is a total crime scene, I bought electricity of R260 just now and it only gave me electricity worth of R104 and the R156 was said to be the service fee??? What service am I paying that is 60% of the purchase price????
This thing is a scam
How to reset the prepaid meter
How do I reset the prepaid meter
The City recommends that prepaid customers buy units directly from the City as other sellers can have additional fees on transactions.
So why did the City Of Tshwane send a third party to install my prepaid meter? Is this just another scam?
Hi I use about 11 units a day. I moved into a complex in march. I wanna know how much must I buy to make it threw the month. Please let me know it will help
Why must we pensioners pay more when Eskom cannot collect its debt?
Cut the non payers off until they pay.
They are nothing but thieves.
Hi I’ve been to umzinto area I bought R200 electricity got more units than Phoenix why is it different we all humans
I applied for a reduction, and I am still waiting for an answer.
Why must we pay so much money for electricity and get so little out. And yet it keeps going up. The poor must always suffer. Is this fair.
Electricity is so expensive. The tariffs are killing us!!
How can one buy electricity directly from the city? Should i visit the municipal offices?
Is there an online system where i can do this??
The CIU inside the house is inconsistent, often says “failed” when trying to get a reading yet connects perfectly at other times. Also the 2 key change tokens that I received 1st line “success “ and 2nd line “failed” please explain
I see a lot of comments from dissatisfied customers using pre – paid electricity meters but can’t see explanations/responses from the city of Cape Town. Why is that?
I bought lights for R3500 for the month and only received 909 units that is R3.85 per unit why am I paying so much per unit and how can I reduce the tarrif rate
Today the 3rd I bought R300 prepaid electricity. I only got 89 units. It means I paid R2.92 excl vat per unit. But in the block rates of Tshwane for 2024 it starts at R2.70. Why do I pay R2.92 per unit. After the 10th I got 25 units for R100. That means I paid R4 per unit. I am using like 10units per day. For 30 days I need 300 units. That will cost me R1200 just for electricity for one person and I am not at home during day and sleep at night not using electricity. It is totally outrages.
Another money grabbing scheme with many many issues keeping this k@k idea a float.
In our town Middelburg EC there is a big ?? About the rates of price to unites. They will try and run around the block with you but no true explanation why it is so high. Meters are set on fast and you use more units then you are supposed to. Bring it under there attention and they pull up there shoulders and tell you there is nothing wrong (30 units p/day). NOTHING WRONG!!!!!! And you do not even use electrical stove or kettle. Gas stove/kettle. GEYSER switch on for one hour per day. Laughing stock.
Recently I tracked the usage of electricity and the result showed we used 10 units plus a day, so from Monday to Friday it was around there in terms of usage however on the weekend although we were not home the units decreased (20 plus a day ) that on Saturday and Sunday. We stay in a flat. Last time we discovered there are people who breach from other users. How can we detect the perpetrators?
