MMC for Human Settlements conducts oversight visits to assess key housing projects

In the last week, I conducted oversight visits to several capital projects undertaken by the Human Settlements Department to inspect their progress. The projects include the following:

  1. Atteridgeville Ext 19 Mayoral Houses

The Mayoral Houses initiative is well on track for completion at the end of the current financial year, 30 June 2023. The 40 houses that were built are intended to provide dignified shelter for our most vulnerable residents, including those living with disabilities and the elderly.

  1. Olievenhoutbosch Ext 60 housing project

The Olievenhoutbosch Ext 60 housing project is set to resume shortly after Council, at the end of May 2023, approved the amendment to the original contract through Section 116 of the Local Government: Municipal Finance Management Act, 2003 (Act 56 of 2003) to adjust the price in line with the revised national housing subsidy quantum and the duration by 12 months from the date of approval. The project involves building 447 fully subsidised low-cost houses.

  1. Mamelodi (Phomolong) sewer reticulation project

The Human Settlements Department has undertaken a sewer provision project for the community of Phomolong, Mamelodi, Ward 40. Work has resumed on the project after it has been halted due to community unrest.

I will continue to provide comprehensive oversight of all our capital projects in order to ensure that the City gets value for money, that any bottlenecks identified are dealt with, and that projects are completed in a timely manner.
