MMC for Human Settlements
The Human Settlements Department has taken a decision to transfer the Blesbok, Bosbok, Ou Stalshoogte and Nuwe Stalshoogte social housing buildings in Arcadia to the Housing Company Tshwane (HCT), a social housing entity of the City.
This move will serve to unlock the necessary grant funding from the Social Housing Regulatory Agency (SHRA) to effect the necessary refurbishment of the buildings.
All four buildings are high-rise rental stock owned by the City. The buildings are currently in a bad state and require extensive repairs and maintenance to restore them to their former glory.
During my recent oversight visit to the buildings, I interacted with residents and encouraged them to pay their rent on time to enable the City to conduct maintenance at the buildings.
With the City currently facing financial distress, we call on all tenants of our rental stock to pay what is due to the City in the form of rent and other services.
I will conduct further visits to our remaining high-rise rental buildings to ascertain their state and effect the necessary interventions to keep them habitable.
Providing affordable rental housing opportunities remains a key priority for the multiparty government.
