Don’t keep quiet, lets continue to fight gender-based violence.

Media statement                                                                                       11 December 2023

Cllr Peggy de Bruin

MMC for Community and Social Development Services

Every year, the City of Tshwane works with civil-society movements during the 16-days of activism for no violence against women and children campaign which runs from 25 November to 10 December, to highlight the urgent need to eradicate all forms of gender-based violence (GBV).

This year was no different. Various stakeholders including Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Department of Health, Palesa Mine, Mali Martin, Kids Care, Ubuhle Care and many others, joined hands with the City to raise awareness on the different types of GBV, its impact on society and on how to recognise and respond to it.

This was done in community halls and mass road marches supported by educational speeches and distribution of pamphlets in crowded public spaces. Residents were also encouraged to participate in the policy formulation as this scourge affects all of us.

Importantly, the rebuilding and reconnecting through the men’s dialogue was also promoted to highlight the intersectional nature of GBV considering factors like sexuality; patriarchy, mental health, spirituality, substance abuse and domestic violence; and to highlight the impact of gender roles on parenting.

As we conclude the 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children and femicide, it is important to highlight that the City of Tshwane will continue to lead efforts aimed at highlighting GBV and offering support through our year long programme.

I would like to thank all stakeholders involved, residents of Tshwane and the media for assisting us in spreading this important message that no one should be left behind.

The City will continue to partner with any stakeholder willing to better the lives of our residents.
