Public Participation meetings for the City of Tshwane draft integrated waste management plan starts on 21 February 2024
The City of Tshwane invites community members to be part of the public participation meetings in various Regions of the City which will commence tomorrow, 21 February 2024, with the last meeting expected on 3 March 2024.
In terms of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 (Act 59 of 2008), the City seeks to finalise its draft Integrated Waste Management Plan (IWMP), which aims to introduce a new way of managing waste in Tshwane. This is a paradigm shift away from the historic collect and bury waste management practices. The new paradigm aims for the commoditisation of waste and entrenching sustainable waste management practices.
The legislated requirement to consult interested and affected parties when developing an IWMP is to ensure that stakeholders are provided with an opportunity to have their say in shaping the City’s waste management vision and to participate in formulating the City’s waste management strategic objectives.
The IWMP development process is on the following trajectory:
- Concluded: Investigations necessary to obtain the relevant information to support the development of the IWMP
- Underway: Internal and external consultation of stakeholders on the draft IWMP
- Upcoming: Incorporate stakeholders’ inputs into the IWMP
- Upcoming: Obtain approval of the final IWMP by Council
- Upcoming: Obtain approval of the IWMP by the relevant provincial MEC
- Upcoming: Implement the IWMP
Residents are encouraged to actively participate towards achieving sustainable waste management practices.
