The City of Tshwane commends the Emergency Services Department (ESD) for its swift and effective response to the severe thunderstorms that hit the city over the weekend.

The powerful thunderstorm unleashed destructive winds and rainfall and caused widespread damage, including downed power lines and uprooted trees. The City’s emergency services were called out to over 25 storm-related incidents and in most cases assisted with the removal of trees, including one at their own central fire station.

Despite the severity of the weather event, ESD-coordinated response teams worked tirelessly to restore normalcy and safeguard public safety.

The City is relieved to report that there were no reports of serious injuries or fatalities. This outcome is a testament to the professionalism, preparedness and dedication of our emergency services personnel.

As we reflect on the aftermath of the storm, the City reaffirms its commitment to prioritising the safety and well-being of all residents. We commend the bravery and resilience demonstrated by ESD staff in the face of adversity, and we stand ready to support ongoing efforts to address any remaining challenges and ensure a swift recovery for affected communities.

As the MMC for Community Safety, I would like to thank all the emergency services personnel involved in the response, including the Fire Department, Disaster Management Centre and the Tshwane Metro Police Department. I would also like to thank community groups and other role players who responded to storm-related incidents and helped clear fallen trees to open roads.

Residents in need of ESD services are reminded to call 107 toll-free.
