City launches R33 million water-security project in collaboration with Danish City of Aarhus

The City of Tshwane and the Danish City of Aarhus officially launched a three-year collaborative project to help improve the City of Tshwane’s capacity to manage its water resources.

This partnership is a window of opportunity for the City to learn best practices in water security and management from the Danish government.

The two cities have agreed to collaborate on water-management projects, such as reducing non-revenue water losses, conducting active leak detection, prioritising pipe replacement, focusing on own water generation and managing waste water effectively.

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has allocated R33 million to the project. This will go towards funding different study models and concepts that seek to enhance Tshwane’s water security. The project will run from 1 April 2023 until 31 March 2026.

The exciting launch took place at the University of Pretoria Future Africa Campus with officials from the City of Tshwane, the City of Aarhus and the Danish Embassy, as well as other stakeholders.

“Tshwane has many water challenges in, for example, the Hammanskraal issue and of course other parts of the city. It is therefore important to work with other world-class cities and learn from them so that we can build a capital city that works for all its people,” said Cllr Brink, Executive Mayor of Tshwane.

“I would like to thank the Embassy of Denmark, C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and all our City officials who are working on this project. Maintaining our water infrastructure is one of my top priorities and we must humble ourselves to accept help and guidance from others, so that Tshwane can become water resilient,” added Brink.
