City of Tshwane receives positive feedback from 39 independent power producers

Media statement                                                                                          28 February 2024

Cllr Cilliers Brink

Executive Mayor of Tshwane

I am pleased to report that the City of Tshwane has received positive feedback and responses on our Request for Information (RFI) notice sent out to potential independent power producers (IPPs) who have an interest in alternative energy generation.

The RFI notice was sent out in December last year and officially closed on 20 February 2024. We received 39 submissions from credible players in the renewable energy space.

The RFI is a critical information-sharing process and is one of the key steps that will enable the City to develop and issue a detailed and evidenced-based Request for Proposal (RFP).

Following the 39 submissions, the Office of the City Manager will now move to appoint a committee to go through the contents. This step will determine how the City structures its next step of issuing an RFP for an energy supply mix that includes renewable energy and powering up the Pretoria West and Rooiwal Power Stations by leasing them to market.

The City is making significant progress in our efforts to reduce the burden of load-shedding. In January 2024, Council approved the second Rooiwal report giving permission to proceed with the 40-year lease of Rooiwal Power Station and Pretoria West Power Station.

Overall, the City aims to secure at least 1 000 MW of energy over the next three years from a mix of the power stations and alternative energy sources provided by IPPs.

I want to thank all the parties who have made their submissions on alternative and renewable energy solutions and technologies that the City can use to become less reliant on Eskom.
