City of Tshwane distributes refuse bags and waste bins in Region 5 to reduce littering and illegal dumping

Media statement                                                                                          28 February 2024

Cllr Ziyanda Zwane

MMC for Environment and Agriculture Management

As part of the City’s rudimentary services, the Environment and Agriculture Management Department distributed 2 502 refuse bags and 31 waste bins to households in formal and informal settlements in Region 5. Residents are encouraged to apply for waste bins and equally look after them. The bins assist in storing waste neatly and can prevent illegal dumping.

It should be noted that in terms of applicable by-laws, bins are not for sale and remain the property of the City. In case a waste bin is lost or damaged, a once-off replacement fee is charged to the customer account, which is linked to ensure effective billing. All bin replacement applications must be accompanied by a supporting affidavit.

For March 2024, the department will concentrate on Region 6 for the Rekaofela Campaign, a drive that’s aimed at realising a cleaner and greener city through proper waste management services.

All residents are encouraged to support the initiative to stop illegal dumping and assist the City in reducing illegal dumping. The Rekaofela Campaign will take place as follows:
